September Contest Results: 42 Teams Registered, 12 Outstanding Cases Selected for Finals
Busan City held the ‘2024 Carbon Neutral Green Action Promotion Contest’ on the 23rd at the City Hall main conference room to realize the vision of ‘Busan as a Global Hub City Free of Climate Crisis by 2050.’
The city created a platform for communication where outstanding cases of the five carbon-neutral green actions practiced in daily life were presented, aiming to encourage voluntary participation across all sectors of society through spreading public consensus and sharing examples.
The five actions refer to carbon-neutral practices through ?Energy (energy transition starting with electricity saving) ?Consumption (low-carbon consumption starting with purchasing low-carbon products) ?Transportation (using public transport and switching to electric and hydrogen vehicles) ?Resource Circulation (circular economy starting with new and recycled products) ?Absorption Sources (understanding the importance of carbon-absorbing forests and their creation and protection).
As a result of the excellent case contest held last September, 42 cases of practices from village communities, schools, organizations, companies, and institutions were submitted, and among them, 12 were selected as outstanding cases and advanced to the finals of this contest.
The contest was held in two categories (Group and General), and rankings were decided through presentations and on-site judging: ▲2 Grand Prize winners (3 million KRW each) ▲4 Excellence Award winners (2 million KRW each) ▲6 Encouragement Award winners (1 million KRW each) were awarded.
The contest was divided into the ‘Group’ category targeting carbon-neutral self-reliant villages and village communities, and the ‘General’ category targeting schools, public institutions, and companies. Six teams from each category competed in the final presentation, selecting and announcing ▲1 Grand Prize winner ▲2 Excellence Award winners ▲3 Encouragement Award winners respectively.
The Grand Prize in the Group category was awarded to the ‘Kids Market’ operated by the Dahangbok Volunteer Group in Hwamyung-dong, Buk-gu, which gave new life to discarded childcare products linking resource circulation and low-carbon consumption. The Grand Prize in the General category was awarded to ‘Busanjin Girls’ Middle School,’ which presented a case of voluntary participation and experiential activities linked to the curriculum in school life.
The two teams that received the Grand Prize at the contest plan to further spread their outstanding cases through presentations at the ‘Carbon Neutral Lifestyle Practice Workshop’ to be held in early December.
On the 23rd, in addition to the contest, various side events were held at City Hall.
These included diverse experiential activities such as ▲Making your own carbon absorption pot ▲Making plastic-free scrubbing pads ▲Refill station for eco-friendly detergent ▲Making pencil cases using wetsuits, as well as a book talk for youth themed around environmental stories.
Lee Byung-seok, Director of the Environmental Policy Office, said, “Since achieving carbon neutrality in urban areas is led by citizens, I ask for your great interest and effort so that the challenging carbon neutrality reduction goals can be felt, empathized with, and translated into action.”
