Memorial Concert at Yongin Samsung Electronics Talent Development Center
Large Attendance by Bereaved Families, Executives, and Employees
Pianist Cho Seong-jin Performs Again This Year
Tomorrow: Memorial Ceremony Followed by Lunch with Executives
Attention on Whether a Separate Message Will Be Released
A concert to commemorate the 4th anniversary (the 25th) of the late Lee Kun-hee, former Chairman of Samsung, will be held on the afternoon of the 24th at the Samsung Electronics Human Resources Development Center in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province.
The memorial concert will be attended by a large number of people including Lee Jae-yong, Chairman of Samsung Electronics, family members, Samsung presidents and executives, nearby residents, and representatives of partner companies.
It is reported that before the performance begins, the presidents of Samsung’s electronics affiliates, including Han Jong-hee, Vice Chairman and Head of the Device Experience (DX) Division of Samsung Electronics, Jeon Young-hyun, Vice Chairman and Head of the Device Solutions (DS) Division, Choi Joo-sun, President of Samsung Display, and Jang Deok-hyun, President of Samsung Electro-Mechanics, will hold a meeting.
While honoring the late chairman’s achievements and philosophy of New Management, there is also a possibility that they will discuss the current business status and strategies ahead of the Q3 earnings announcement scheduled for next week.
Following last year, world-renowned pianist Cho Seong-jin is expected to perform at this year’s concert. Cho Seong-jin also received the Samsung Ho-Am Prize in the Arts category last year.
On the 25th, the anniversary of Chairman Lee’s passing, a 4th memorial service will be held at the family burial site in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province. After paying respects, Chairman Lee and the Samsung presidents are expected to move to the Changjo Hall at the Samsung Human Resources Development Center in Yongin for a luncheon. Changjo Hall serves as a training center for new employees and houses a bust of the late chairman. In previous years, Chairman Lee attended the memorial service and then had lunch there.
There is also a possibility that Chairman Lee will deliver a separate message at this gathering. Before his promotion to chairman in 2022, he emphasized at a luncheon with affiliate presidents that "now is the time to act more boldly and challengingly," and stressed that "especially in difficult and challenging times, we must prepare ahead and develop our capabilities."
Meanwhile, the late Chairman Lee Kun-hee became the 2nd chairman of Samsung Group after the death of his father, founder Lee Byung-chul, in 1987. He is credited with leading the group’s innovation through the 'New Management Declaration' in 1993, famously saying "Change everything except your wife and children," which elevated Samsung to the ranks of global companies. He collapsed from a myocardial infarction at his home in Yongsan-gu, Seoul, in May 2014 and remained bedridden for over six years and five months before passing away on October 25, 2020, at the age of 78.
