Following the construction of 4 sites last year, 4 additional sites including Guam Elementary School were completed this year
Creating a safe walking environment with speeding and stop line violation guidance functions and improving urban aesthetics through integrated construction
Recently, the number of traffic accidents involving children under the age of 12 in school zones due to vehicle speeding and signal violations has been increasing, highlighting the growing need to protect the safety of child pedestrians.
According to the 2023 “Special Traffic Safety Survey” by the Korea Transportation Safety Authority, 41.4% of all traffic accidents occurring in Gwanak-gu were caused by “failure to comply with safe driving.”
In response, Gwanak-gu (Mayor Park Junhee) has added four more integrated safety intelligent poles (Smart Poles) equipped with advanced technology this year, following last year, to create a safer walking environment for residents.
The district designated high-risk traffic accident zones within school zones in front of elementary schools and completed the installation of integrated safety intelligent poles (Smart Poles) at four locations in September: Guam Elementary School, Bonghyeon Elementary School, Sillim Elementary School, and Shinwoo Elementary School.
The “integrated safety intelligent pole (Smart Pole)” encourages safe driving by displaying photos of violating vehicles on an LED electronic board through a system that monitors vehicle speeding and stop line violations.
Additionally, the integrated safety intelligent pole consolidates various road facilities such as ▲closed-circuit television (CCTV), ▲illegal parking enforcement electronic boards, ▲traffic signs, and ▲streetlights, improving urban aesthetics and reducing individual installation costs.
Furthermore, it provides smart functions convenient for residents, including ▲short-range wireless network (Wi-Fi) and ▲Smart Seoul urban data sensors (S-DoT), helping to create a pleasant living environment.
Last year, the district installed and has been operating integrated safety intelligent poles (Smart Poles) at four locations: Nanwoo Elementary School, Miseong Elementary School, Inheon Elementary School, and Jowon Elementary School. It also established three integrated safety intelligent poles (Smart Poles) with traffic light functions in the Sillim-ro area, which has a high volume of foot traffic.
The district plans to designate 3 to 4 more locations within the region next year to expand the installation of integrated safety intelligent poles (Smart Poles).
Park Junhee, Mayor of Gwanak-gu, said, “We hope that the installation of Smart Poles will allow children to commute to and from school more safely,” adding, “We will continue to do our best to provide smart administrative services using information and communication technology (ICT) so that residents can enjoy a safer and more comfortable life.”
