"Reported '800 Million Won Cash Missing,' 2.8 Billion Won of Crime Proceeds Exposed"

The father-in-law who hid the fraudulent profits of his son-in-law, the CEO of a cryptocurrency company, was caught after filing a theft report with the police.

On the 23rd, the Financial Crime Investigation Unit of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency arrested and sent Mr. A, a man in his 50s, to prosecution on charges of concealing criminal proceeds.

Mr. A's crime was uncovered when he himself reported to 112 on the 14th of this month that "80 million won in cash stored in an officetel has disappeared."

The Anyang Manan Police Station in Gyeonggi Province, which responded to the scene, noticed suspicious behavior as Mr. A failed to properly explain the source of the funds. The police then confirmed through the Financial Crime Investigation Unit that Mr. A was connected to the investment leading room fraud case involving his son-in-law, Mr. B.

Subsequently, the Anyang Manan Police Station captured evidence via closed-circuit television (CCTV) that Mr. A moved the money from the officetel just before reporting to a nearby different officetel. They discovered 280 million won in cash at the second officetel and informed the Financial Crime Investigation Unit.

Upon receiving the report from the Anyang Manan Police Station, the Financial Crime Investigation Unit dispatched officers, arrested Mr. A, and seized 280 million won. Furthermore, they secured Mr. A’s custody and handed him over to the prosecution on the same day, believing that he was aware that the 280 million won was proceeds from Mr. B’s fraudulent activities.

During police questioning, Mr. A reportedly stated that "not 80 million won but only a portion of it was missing. The money was kept because my daughter asked me to hold onto it."

The Anyang Manan Police Station plans to continue investigating whether Mr. A’s theft report is true. The Financial Crime Investigation Unit is conducting an investigation into the fraud charges against son-in-law Mr. B.
