Show Host Yoon Nan-hee Resumes Activities at Lotte Home Shopping
Previously Suspended Indefinitely Over Defamation Controversy
Broadcasting Review Committee Issues 'Warning' Sanction
Show host Yoon Nan-hee, who had suspended her activities due to controversy over disrespecting the deceased, has made a comeback through a new channel.
According to industry sources on the 23rd, Yoon has been appearing as a guest on Lotte Home Shopping since the beginning of this month, selling fashion products. The broadcasts take place every Tuesday at 8 a.m., and a total of three episodes have aired so far. Lotte Home Shopping stated about Yoon, "She is appearing once a week as a guest at the continuous request of small and medium-sized fashion product partners." She plans to sell only fashion products, not beauty products that were involved in past controversies, and it is reported that she accepted the condition that "the first broadcast must be conducted in the form of a donation" for her return.
Previously, in February last year, Yoon was embroiled in controversy during a CJ OnStyle home shopping broadcast while selling cosmetics when she mentioned a deceased famous comedian. Along with introducing the cosmetics, she said, "I thought of a certain female comedian," and added, "She had quite a lot of worries because of bad skin, and I think she would have liked to know about this (cosmetics)," which sparked criticism. As a result, CJ OnStyle imposed an indefinite suspension on her appearances.
Moreover, consumers who watched the broadcast filed complaints with the Korea Communications Standards Commission regarding Yoon's inappropriate remarks. The complainant explained, "Yoon's remarks reminded people of a comedian who ended her life due to worsening skin disease," and added, "She expressed regret saying 'If only she had known about this product,' but without presenting clinical evidence, she crossed the line by expressing the misfortune of a family." Consequently, the commission judged that the broadcast violated the "Regulations on the Review of Product Introduction and Sales Broadcasts" and issued a legal sanction of "warning." After the incident, Yoon posted an apology stating, "I sincerely apologize for hurting many people by reminding them of someone," and "I will be more careful with my words and become a more humble person."
Meanwhile, Yoon is known as South Korea's first show host and the first announcer on new media cable TV. She is also recognized as the first person to receive a billion-won annual salary in home shopping.
