Mayor Won Gang-su: "University and Local Government-Led Compressed City Leadership and Future Discussions"
Wonju City, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province (Mayor Won Kang-su) announced on the 23rd that the "International Symposium on Revitalization of Local Cities," hosted by the National Architecture Policy Committee and sponsored by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and Wonju City, will be held at 9:30 a.m. on the 24th at Hotel Inter-Burgo Wonju.
This symposium serves as a platform for small and medium-sized cities facing population decline and old downtown deterioration to explore ways to design a sustainable future, featuring presentations and panel discussions by domestic and international experts.
Experts from local cities in Germany, the Netherlands, Japan, and other countries will gather to share various solutions for revitalizing local cities.
Under the theme of "New Spatial Strategies for Regional Development," Professor Han Kwang-ya from Dongguk University will chair the session, with presentations by Won Kang-su, Mayor of Wonju City, △ Lee Seok-jung, CEO of ISA International Urban Architecture Office △ Shin Aiba, Professor of Urban Science Policy at Tokyo Metropolitan University △ Baek Jin, Professor of Architecture at Seoul National University △ Lee Gyo-seok, Director at MVRDV in the Netherlands.
In the afternoon session titled "The Role of Universities and Local Governments in Strengthening the Competitiveness of Small and Medium-sized Cities," chaired by Professor Baek Han-yeol of the Department of Architecture at Hannam University, △ Mario Plaman, Professor of Urban Planning at Stuttgart University of Technology △ Chie Nozawa, Professor of Political Economy at Meiji University △ Isabel Maria Pingenberger, Professor at FH Aachen University of Applied Sciences △ Lee Sang-hyun, Officer of Urban Design Department, Daegu Metropolitan City △ Alexander Vandel, Associate Professor of Urban Studies at Delft University of Technology will discuss policy directions to respond to local extinction.
Mayor Won Kang-su of Wonju City stated, "This symposium is expected to be a meaningful occasion to discuss the leadership and alternative futures of compact cities led by universities and local governments, and to share revitalization strategies for small and medium-sized cities facing local extinction."
