Yongjusa has been conducting the Surukjae ceremony since 2017 to revive the history of Surukjae, which has been performed since the Goryeo Dynasty. Surukjae is a Buddhist ritual that preaches the teachings of Buddha and offers food to widely save the lonely spirits wandering on water and land.
The Yongjusa Surukdaejae reenacted traditional rites including the trial ceremony welcoming the spirits, the Daeryeong and Gwanyok rituals where the spirits are served and bathed cleanly, the organization of the Surukjae space, the Sajadan and Orodan setting the ceremony space, the rituals of Sangdan, Jungdan, and Hadan, as well as the sending off and dedication ceremonies.
In his congratulatory speech, Jeong Myeong-geun, mayor of Hwaseong-si, said, "I hope this Surukdaejae will be an opportunity for our society to be a little more considerate, loving, and respectful of our neighbors, making it a better place to live and find hope."
