Improving Accessibility for High-Risk Neonatal Patients in Gangwon Yeongdong Region
Gangwon Province "Will Support to Ensure Access to Top-Level Medical Services"
Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province (Governor Kim Jin-tae) announced on the 22nd that Gangneung Asan Hospital was finally selected in the ‘2024 Neonatal Intensive Care Regional Center Support Project’ competition hosted by the Ministry of Health and Welfare.
The Neonatal Intensive Care Regional Center Support Project designates medical institutions responsible for treating high-risk newborns and supports them to provide stable care for high-risk fetuses and newborns. If selected in the competition, an operating expense of 8 million KRW per bed is supported annually, and in the case of Gangneung Asan Hospital, 5 out of a total of 13 beds were designated as support targets.
Currently, in Gangwon Province, Gangwon National University Hospital in Chuncheon and Wonju Severance Christian Hospital perform the functions of neonatal intensive care regional centers, contributing to the safe birth and health promotion of high-risk fetuses and newborns.
Gangneung Asan Hospital is the only medical institution operating a neonatal intensive care unit in the Yeongdong area, treating about 20 very low birth weight infants under 1,500 grams annually, and has maintained a first-grade rating in the neonatal intensive care unit adequacy evaluation for two consecutive times, recognized for its high-level medical care and capability.
Lee Kyung-hee, Director of the Welfare and Health Bureau of Gangwon Province, stated, “Gangneung Asan Hospital has already played a central role in treating high-risk newborns in the region, so this selection in the competition is very meaningful,” and added, “We will continue to prepare support measures so that newborns can receive the highest level of medical services in the future.”
