Yeongdeungpo-gu, the 'Garden City,' Collaborates with Seoul City to Create the 'Yeouido Wave Garden'

Tree Planting Event at Yeouido Hangang Park with Seoul City on the 26th at 10:30 AM
'Give Me Recyclables, I'll Give You Pretty Flowers!' Recycling Booth Operation... Citizen Participation Programs like 'Plant Trees and Enjoy 5 Joys'... About 1,000 Citizens Including Youth, Disabled and Companions, Yeongdeungpo Village Gardeners, and Local Residents Expected to Participate

Yeongdeungpo-gu (District Mayor Choi Ho-kwon) announced that it will hold the ‘Creating an Autumn Companion Charm Garden’ event on October 26 at Yeouido Hangang Park in collaboration with Seoul City.

Following the ‘Relay Tree Planting’ event held on Arbor Day last March, the district is now promoting an autumn tree planting event in cooperation with Seoul City. Through this, the district aims to raise awareness of the importance of trees in carbon absorption and take the lead in spreading garden culture.

About 1,000 citizens, including people with disabilities and their companions, youth, Yeongdeungpo village gardeners, and local residents, will participate in creating the ‘Yeouido Wave Garden’ at this event.

Yeouido Hangang Park is a representative waterfront park frequently visited by citizens. This garden creation is designed to invigorate the local community and promote environmental protection by having citizens directly plant flowers and trees in part of the park.

The ‘Yeouido Wave Garden’ is not just a simple tree planting event but a citizen garden imbued with stories, giving it special meaning. The trees, grasses, and wildflowers planted together by citizens will sway like waves against the backdrop of the Hangang River, symbolizing the spreading of garden culture like waves. The garden will be created with this symbolic meaning in mind.

Employees of Koscom Co., Ltd. will also participate in the event to contribute to climate change response efforts. Additionally, village gardeners trained by the district will join to teach residents how to plant flowers and trees and actively participate in garden creation.

Furthermore, from 9:30 AM to 12:00 PM on the day of the event, the district will hold a ‘Flower Pot Distribution’ event to encourage resource recycling. Under the theme ‘Give me pretty flowers! Bring recyclable items!’, participants can exchange recyclable items such as glass bottles, cans, clear PET bottles, and milk cartons for pretty flower pots. Wearing the bracelet received during the exchange allows participation in the ‘Plant Trees and 5 Joys Room’ program.

‘Plant Trees and 5 Joys Room’ is an experiential program offering five types of enjoyment: listening, making, drawing, playing, and healing. It will operate from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Through various activities such as pungmul band samulnori (traditional percussion), stone drawing traveling through the garden, and balloon art, the program will provide citizens with diverse experiences.

Residents wishing to participate in the Yeouido Wave Garden creation event can apply via the QR code on the event notice, and the district will recruit the first 200 applicants on a first-come, first-served basis.

In May, the district declared ‘Garden City Yeongdeungpo’ and has been creating distinctive gardens throughout daily life, including the Mullae-dong Flower Garden, Dangsan Park Moss Garden, and Waterway Garden within Yeouido Sister Neighborhood Park.

Moreover, the district is enhancing its status as a high-quality garden city by hosting various garden and plant-themed events such as village gardener training, garden festivals, garden talk concerts, and green cinema.

Choi Ho-kwon, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu, said, “This event, held in cooperation with Seoul City, is a valuable opportunity for residents to experience garden culture in their daily lives by planting flowers and trees directly at Yeouido Hangang Park. We will continue to do our best to transform the old downtown area into ‘Garden City Yeongdeungpo,’ full of relaxation and freshness. We will also collaborate with various organizations to create even more diverse gardens.”
