KT Saenozoh announced on the 21st that it will begin a hunger strike protest in opposition to the company's restructuring plan.
Earlier, KT announced plans to reduce its workforce by 5,700 employees, about 30% of the total, through transfers and voluntary retirements. The company is promoting a plan to establish subsidiaries called KT OSP and KT P&M to transfer employees.
KT Saenozoh stated, "Ignoring KT's core telecommunications infrastructure and making decisions that threaten public safety and national stability is unacceptable. As seen in the Ahyeon fire, the Busan telecommunications disaster, and wired phone outages in Seoul and Cheonan, the stability of telecommunications infrastructure is not simply a matter of cost reduction."
They added, "The first union hastily agreed to the subsidiary transition," and "We strongly condemn the management's decision."
They continued, "We are starting a hunger strike to protect workers' livelihoods and the safety of telecommunications infrastructure," and "This protest is against the management that ignores the voices of KT workers and the company-friendly union."
