Goryeong County in Gyeongbuk Province was selected as the best local government nationwide in the evaluation of "2024 National Local Governments' National Heritage Management Capacity Quantitative Diagnosis" conducted by the National Heritage Agency, ranking first among 229 basic local governments across the country.
The national local governments' national heritage management capacity diagnosis evaluation was conducted based on four major categories?administrative foundation, administrative operation, administrative capacity, and governance?divided into a total of 15 indicators.
In 2021, Goryeong County received the Commissioner of the Cultural Heritage Administration's Commendation for qualitative diagnosis in the local government cultural heritage management capacity evaluation. In 2022 and 2023, it continuously achieved excellent results by winning the grand prize and excellence award respectively in the Gyeongbuk Province cultural heritage evaluation.
Since 2019, Goryeong County has organized the Cultural Heritage Division, a dedicated organization for cultural heritage, and to enhance the efficiency of cultural heritage administration, it has established and operated a cultural heritage information search program and management system to promptly respond to civil complaints and manage vast amounts of cultural heritage data.
The county has built disaster prevention manuals for each type of disaster and established a disaster prevention system monitored 24 hours a day in connection with the county’s integrated control center. It also formulated a mid- to long-term development plan for Goryeong County’s cultural heritage. Notably, in 2023, the Goryeong Jisandong Tumuli were inscribed as a World Heritage Site under the Gaya Tumuli, and in 2024, Goryeong was designated as the ancient capital of Daegaya, marking remarkable achievements.
County Governor Namcheol Lee stated, “Goryeong County’s excellent performance in the 2024 national local governments' national heritage management capacity diagnosis evaluation is the result of operating administration by organizing the Cultural Heritage Division, a dedicated department for cultural heritage, to meet changing administrative demands and efficiently preserve and manage national heritage.” He added, “We are focusing administrative efforts on the national heritage sector by promoting numerous achievements such as the inscription of the Goryeong Jisandong Tumuli as a World Heritage Site under the Gaya Tumuli, designation of Goryeong as the ancient capital of Daegaya, efficient and proactive cultural heritage preservation management, establishment of a prompt civil complaint response system, the World Heritage Festival, and various national heritage utilization projects such as cultural heritage night events.”
He continued, “We will continue to preserve, manage, and utilize the precious cultural heritage that contains the wisdom of our ancestors’ lives, breathe vitality into the region, contribute to the revitalization of local culture and economy, and strive for Goryeong to become a brilliant historical and cultural city.”
