"Closer to the citizens! One step closer to becoming the 'Global Hub City Busan'!"
Busan City will hold the 'Busan UN Weeks' across Busan for 19 days from the 24th of this month to November 11th.
'Busan UN Weeks' is an event started in 2019 by Busan, the only city in the world with a UN Memorial Park, aiming to rise as an international city of peace. It is one of Busan's representative global events held annually.
Hosted by Busan City and organized by the Busan Global City Foundation, Busan UN Weeks is an event that brands Busan as a global peace city by holding various UN-related events over about three weeks, starting from the UN Day (October 24), a common international commemorative day, to the International Memorial Day for UN Veterans (November 11, Turn Toward Busan).
Now in its 5th year, 'Busan UN Weeks' presents 21 diverse programs divided into the 'Pre-Boom-Up Period,' 'Appreciation Week (10.24?10.31),' and 'Memorial Week (11.1?11.11)' under the vision of 'Leap to a Global Hub City Busan.'
Especially this year, cooperation among eight related organizations has been strengthened. The eight organizations are the Busan Global City Foundation, Busan Regional Veterans Office, Nam-gu Office, UN Peace Memorial Hall, UN Memorial Park, ASEAN Culture Center, Cultural Center, and the Education Office.
Programs unique to Busan that leverage the strengths of each organization, such as the UN Mi(Oryukdo) Nam-gu Tour, UN Peace Road walking competition, introduction of ASEAN war-participating countries, and stories of Korean War heroes, will be expanded to encourage citizen participation and promote the importance and consensus on world peace.
During the 'Pre-Boom-Up Period' continuing since last February, various events were held to widely spread the importance and value of peace and promote UN Weeks, including ▲the creation of a flag street of UN veteran countries in Nam-gu UN Peace Special Zone ▲an art exhibition (art fair) displaying artworks by children from Korea, Japan, and China themed on peace ▲the 26th UN Peace Festival.
In particular, in July, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the city formed and selected the 'UNs,' a public diplomacy supporters group composed of both domestic and foreign nationals, who planned and produced various promotional videos.
From September, activities to widely promote UN Weeks internationally, such as the 'Remember Roll Call' event, which calls out the names of veterans to honor their memory, have been conducted.
During the following 'Appreciation Week,' events such as ▲the 79th UN Day ceremony ▲lighting of the Peace Light ▲Season 3 of the Stories of Korean War Heroes will be held to express gratitude to veterans who participated in the Korean War and dedicated themselves to defending freedom.
Among them, the mobile-based experiential mission program 'Stories of Korean War Heroes' will present 'Season 3' with new stories, responding to the high popularity among future generations and families last year. 'Stories of Korean War Heroes Season 3,' containing historical stories of veterans' sacrifice and courage, will be held free of charge every weekend until November 10 at the UN Memorial Park for 1,000 citizens.
During the 'Memorial Week,' which honors the spirit of sacrifice of war dead who gave their lives for peace, events such as ▲the World Peace Forum (11.1) ▲UN Peace Road walking competition (11.3) ▲International Memorial Ceremony for UN Veterans 'Turn Toward Busan' will be held. The conclusion of 'Memorial Week' will mark the grand finale of the approximately three-week-long Busan UN Weeks.
One of the particularly notable events this year is the 'Busan World Peace Forum' held on November 1 at Nurimaru APEC House. Reflecting the global situation of ongoing wars, conflicts, and rising tensions, a special dialogue with global journalists and NGO staff will be held under the theme 'A World Without War: Strategies for Global Peace and Cooperation,' delivering a vivid message about the importance of peace to the citizens of Busan.
Detailed information about the programs conducted during 'Busan UN Weeks' can be found on the Busan UN Weeks website.
Mayor Park Hyung-jun said, "Busan is a city protected by the spirit of the UN, a city that blossomed amid the scars of war and is now moving toward becoming a global hub city. It is a living witness of history showing how much efforts for international solidarity and peace can change. We will further expand UN Weeks centered on the world's only UN Memorial Park and strengthen the branding of 'Busan as the World Peace Hub City' so that future generations can feel the preciousness of peace and the necessity of international solidarity."
