Yoon Kwon-geun, a member of the Daegu City Council (People Power Party, Dalseo District 5), is scheduled to urge measures to reduce the damage suffered by Seongseo residents from air pollution and odor caused by the extension of the use of the Seongseo Resource Recovery Facility during the 5-minute free speech at the 3rd plenary session of the 312th extraordinary meeting held on the 21st.
Due to the amendment of the 'Waste Management Act Enforcement Rules' in 2021, which prohibits direct landfill of waste from 2030, Daegu City faces a situation where about 680 tons of waste must be incinerated daily. However, the incineration capacity of the No. 1 Seongseo Resource Recovery Facility (incinerator), currently under reconstruction, is insufficient to handle this amount. Consequently, Daegu City announced plans to extend the usage period by majorly repairing the No. 2 and No. 3 Seongseo Resource Recovery Facilities, whose service life has expired.
In response, Daegu City Council member Yoon Kwon-geun stated, “I will demand that Daegu City prepare measures so that Seongseo residents do not suffer from air pollution and odor for decades again.”
Through pre-distributed materials, Councilor Yoon pointed out, “The Dalseo District area of Daegu is a region densely populated with undesirable facilities such as the Seongseo Resource Recovery Facility, Seongseo Combined Heat and Power Plant, Bangcheon-ri landfill, and Sang-ri food waste treatment facility, causing residents to suffer damage for a long time.”
In his 5-minute free speech, Councilor Yoon plans to request Daegu City to prepare measures to minimize residents' damage, such as replacing garbage collection vehicles and installing state-of-the-art air pollution prevention facilities at the resource recovery facility; provide benefits for residents, including operating shuttle buses for the multipurpose gymnasium under construction near the facility and reducing facility usage fees; and ensure equitable distribution of newly established waste treatment facilities in the future.
