Yongin City in Gyeonggi Province announced on the 20th that it will deploy 'Pedestrian Safety Officers' starting next year to protect the safety of citizens passing near construction sites. The Pedestrian Safety Officers will be dispatched to sites such as sidewalk maintenance work that occupies part of the pedestrian path or gas pipeline installation work, guiding citizens to detour via temporary walkways and inspecting safety facilities such as fences and signboards.

This Pedestrian Safety Officer program is based on the 'Ordinance on the Operation of Pedestrian Safety Officers at Yongin City Construction Sites,' newly established last September. Eligible applicants are Yongin citizens aged between 18 and 65 who have completed both the basic safety and health education for construction work under the Industrial Safety and Health Act and the Pedestrian Safety Officer training course conducted by the city.

Applicants can apply through the city’s website or by visiting or calling the Road Structures Division at City Hall. Those selected as Pedestrian Safety Officers will work 8 hours a day at sidewalk occupation construction sites starting next year. Wages will be paid according to the 'Standard Daily Wage for Ordinary Workers in Construction Work' (165,000 KRW per day as of 2024).

The city will conduct 'Pedestrian Safety Officer Training' in December. The training will consist of theory and practical field exercises, including guidance methods for different types of pedestrians such as the visually impaired, children, and the elderly, who are considered vulnerable road users.

A city official stated, "We will do our best to manage the operation of Pedestrian Safety Officers to protect citizens from various hazards during construction and to contribute to job creation."
