University-Specialized Metaverse 'Ubus' Utilization
Expected Increase in Foreign Students' Participation in University Activities
New Virtual Space 'U-Street' Established for University Students
LG Uplus is accelerating the AI transformation of its metaverse platform by introducing real-time artificial intelligence (AI) interpretation and translation functions into online lectures on 'UVERSE,' a university-specialized metaverse.
The real-time AI interpretation and translation function features the use of speech recognition, machine translation, and speech synthesis technologies, enabling AI to extract the speaker's spoken language, convert it into text, and translate it instantly. The supported translation languages include three languages?Korean, English, and Chinese?catering to the high demand from international students.
LG Uplus expects that the introduction of this service will increase the participation of international students in university activities. In particular, real-time translation into Korean and Chinese is also possible in English-only classes, which is anticipated to improve the efficiency of online lectures and promote active interaction between international and Korean students.
The real-time AI interpretation and translation lecture function is currently being piloted from the second semester of this year at Sookmyung Women’s University and Soonchunhyang University, with plans to continuously expand to other universities. The AI interpretation and translation function will also be applied to online student counseling centers that address university life difficulties, supporting smooth university life for international students.
A new virtual space called 'U-Street,' where university students can communicate based on their interests regardless of their affiliated schools, will also be launched. Students can create gatherings on various topics such as study groups, restaurants, and economics, and freely interact in virtual reality. A separate 3D pop-up store for companies will also be established in this space to actively pursue monetization.
Starting with the real-time AI interpretation and translation service, LG Uplus plans to enhance service functions by utilizing its proprietary AI technology, ixi, including ▲class content summarization ▲generative chatbots ▲AI NPC (Non Player Character). Through this, the company aims to advance services such as university promotion, student psychological counseling, and conversation study, increasing user interaction and extending platform dwell time.
Seung-Hoon Jeon, Executive Director of LG Uplus’s Wired Business Division, said, "As the importance of applying AI technology in the metaverse industry grows, we are introducing and advancing AI in UVERSE as well. We will rapidly enhance service competitiveness with an AI strategy that leverages the strengths of specialized metaverse services."
