Mayor Lee: "Focusing Administrative Efforts to Become a Global Secondary Battery R&D Hub"
Mayor Lee Kang-deok of Pohang gave a special lecture to domestic and international secondary battery experts attending the ‘2024 Brain Link Technology Exchange Meeting,’ highlighting the achievements of Pohang’s secondary battery industry.
Mayor Lee Kang-deok of Pohang is giving a lecture on the theme "Pohang, the Center of Korea's Battery Industry" at the Brain Link Technology Exchange Meeting held at the Grand Sheraton Hotel in Incheon on the 18th.
On the 18th, Mayor Lee Kang-deok delivered a lecture titled ‘Pohang, the Center of Korea’s Battery Industry’ to about 60 domestic and international secondary battery experts attending the Brain Link Technology Exchange Meeting held at the Grand Sheraton Hotel in Incheon, according to Pohang City.
Hosted by the Korea Federation of Science and Technology Societies, this event, held from the 16th to the 18th, brought together leading scholars in secondary batteries from home and abroad to share research and network on next-generation lithium secondary batteries, one of the 12 national strategic technologies.
The event was organized to gather experts leading the future of the global secondary battery industry, government-funded research institutes, corporate research centers, universities, and overseas Korean scientists and engineers in one place to expand international human exchanges and promote global joint research.
In his special lecture, Mayor Lee explained the achievements of Pohang’s secondary battery industry, which has been transforming South Korea’s industrial landscape over the past decade, and shared reflections on the reasons Pohang chose the secondary battery industry and its journey so far.
He introduced how the secondary battery industry is revitalizing Pohang’s economy by citing economic indicators such as GRDP and exports, and also explained the achievements in attracting large-scale corporate investments like EcoPro and national projects, which led to the establishment of specialized complexes and opportunity development zones.
Based on these achievements, the city emphasized that it is focusing on future projects for Pohang, including the establishment of a secondary battery open innovation center as a comprehensive industrial development hub and attracting overseas research institutes to expand global research, aiming to create a secondary battery mega cluster by 2030.
In particular, with the Pohang International Convention Center POEX scheduled for completion in 2027, the mayor introduced events that can expand the global network, such as the International Secondary Battery Expo and the Global Battery City Forum, and requested active participation and promotion from experts and institutions in the future.
Mayor Lee Kang-deok stated, “Pohang City is striving to create optimal conditions for research in related fields, including promoting overseas joint research projects on secondary batteries with the research-oriented university POSTECH. We will continue to focus administrative efforts on providing generous support for nurturing secondary battery talent so that Pohang can establish itself as a global hub for secondary battery research and development beyond Korea.”
