Participation in the '2024 Jingu Senior Citizens Small Expo'

Dong-Eui Institute of Technology (President Kim Young-do) Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation (Onmaeul Sarangchae) recently participated in the ‘2024 Busanjin-gu Senior Citizens Small Expo’ held at Busanjin-gu Office and operated a promotional booth for senior-friendly excellent foods targeting about 900 local residents.

The event held on the 11th was conducted by Dong-Eui Institute of Technology Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation (Onmaeul Sarangchae) with support from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and the Senior-Friendly Industry Support Center of the Korea Food Industry Cluster Promotion Agency. It was promoted to publicize the ‘Senior-Friendly Excellent Food Demonstration Project’ suitable for the elderly in preparation for a super-aged society.


At the event, various programs were conducted including exhibition and education of step-by-step senior-friendly excellent food meal models, tasting experiences, and surveys to improve awareness of excellent foods. Additionally, food packages composed of three types of excellent foods and brochures (on storage and cooking methods of excellent foods) were produced and provided.


Senior-friendly excellent foods are products manufactured and processed by adjusting physical properties, forms, and ingredients to aid elderly intake, nutritional supplementation, digestion, and absorption, enhancing usability for seniors. As of September this year, the Senior-Friendly Industry Support Center has designated 202 products from 42 companies as excellent foods.


Professor Han Jin-sook of the Department of Food Service Industry at Dong-Eui Institute of Technology, the research director, said, “Elderly people experience functional decline in chewing and swallowing, and due to aging and diseases, their food intake decreases, leading to muscle loss and significantly reduced independence due to malnutrition. For the health of the elderly population, convenient cooking and customized meals considering the functional health of seniors are necessary, and the use of senior-friendly excellent foods in elderly meals will greatly increase.”


Lee Hwa-seok, head of the Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation at Dong-Eui Institute of Technology, said, “As our country enters a super-aged society, we will support the successful completion of projects to find solutions to local issues through the senior-friendly excellent food demonstration project.”
