"Was Not in Her Right Mind"... Grandmother Kills 3-Year-Old Granddaughter and Bites Grandson's Face

A Man in His 50s Who Repeated Outpatient and Inpatient Treatment for 15 Years

The prosecution has demanded a 20-year prison sentence for a man in his 50s who was charged with killing his three-year-old granddaughter and abusing his grandson.

On the 17th, the Daejeon District Prosecutors' Office requested the court to sentence Mr. A (54) to 20 years in prison during the sentencing trial held at the Daejeon District Court Criminal Division 11 (Presiding Judge Choi Seok-jin) for charges including child abuse resulting in death under the Special Act on the Punishment of Child Abuse Crimes.

The prosecution stated, "Although the defendant was in a state of diminished mental capacity at the time of the crime, the victim child tragically died, making the outcome very serious," and thus made the sentencing request.

According to the prosecution's charges, on August 12 of last year, Mr. A killed his granddaughter B (3) at his home by hitting her with a plastic container lid and pressing a pillow on her. He also physically abused his grandson C (4) by biting his face hard with his teeth.

Mr. A admitted to all the charges and requested medical treatment and custody. His lawyer stated, "The defendant has repeatedly undergone outpatient and inpatient treatment since 2011 for 15 years," and added, "He had been solely responsible for raising the victim children at the sudden request of his eldest son." The lawyer further requested, "Please consider that the defendant's diminished mental capacity influenced the case, as he had stopped taking medication seven months prior to the incident, fearing it might pose a risk to the children."

Mr. A stated, "I was not in my right mind, and I am very sorry and regretful," adding, "I don't even know how to apologize, and I am truly sorry to my granddaughter. It was too difficult to take care of both children together. Please forgive me."

The victim children's biological father and Mr. A's son reportedly expressed through his lawyer that he hopes for leniency. The sentencing trial is scheduled for the 21st of next month.
