Over 150 Elders Served in Gayatgo Village on the 16th
On the 16th, Goryeong-gun, Gyeongbuk Province, held the 2024 Giroyeon (耆老宴) reenactment event at Gayatgo Village Cultural Center, hosting over 150 elders with County Governor Lee Nam-cheol and heads of various organizations in attendance.
The Giroyeon event is a traditional ceremony where local officials once annually honored the elderly. By reenacting it today, the tradition is preserved, and the event is held every year to honor the elders who have devoted themselves to the community.
The first part of the event featured an exciting Gayageum performance by the Goryeong County Gayageum Ensemble, uplifting the spirits of the elders.
In the second part, gifts and bouquets were presented to the eldest elders?Jeong Gi-seon (Daegaya-eup, 95, female), Lee Jong-eok (Dasan-myeon, 89, male), and the oldest elder?as a wish for their health and longevity.
Following this, the ceremony proceeded with greetings from Goryeong County Governor Lee Nam-cheol, a greeting from Lee Dong-hoon, Jeongyo of Goryeong Hyanggyo, the Yeongbinrye (the host invites guests to the stage), Ipchwii (the host and guests on stage bow to each other), and Jakheonrye (the host offers a ritual drink in turn) in sequence.
Governor Lee Nam-cheol said, “I am grateful that many local elders attended the event,” adding, “It is a meaningful time to strengthen the friendship and camaraderie of elders gathered together after a long time, and I wish all attending elders health and longevity.”
