Gyeonggi Namyangju City and Seoul Dongdaemun District have joined hands to complete the metropolitan subway network in the Seoul metropolitan area.
Namyangju City (Mayor Joo Gwang-deok) signed a "Business Agreement to Urge the Connection (New Track Construction) of the Gyeongchun Line and Suin-Bundang Line" with Seoul Dongdaemun District (District Mayor Lee Pil-hyung) on the 17th.
This agreement mainly focuses on the promotion of the "Gyeongchun Line-Bundang Line direct connection" and the "construction of a single-track railway on the Suin-Bundang Line (Cheongnyangni to Wangsimni Station)," aiming to improve accessibility for Namyangju citizens to Seoul and the eastern and southern parts of the metropolitan area and to enhance transportation convenience through cooperation.
The agreement includes cooperation between the two institutions to form a consensus on the necessity of the project and to actively propose the project to related organizations such as the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, the Korea Rail Network Authority, and Korea Railroad Corporation.
The city has been continuously promoting the "Gyeongchun Line-Bundang Line direct connection" project since 2019 to improve transportation convenience for citizens. This project involves directly connecting the single-track railway on the Suin-Bundang Line (Wangsimni to Cheongnyangni Station) to Maseok Station (Gyeongchun Line) if the new single-track railway is constructed.
Mayor Joo Gwang-deok stated, "This agreement ceremony marks a great first step in the development of the transportation network between Seoul and the metropolitan area. It is expected to be an important turning point that enhances accessibility between Seoul’s Gangnam area and the eastern and southern parts of the metropolitan area and promotes balanced regional development." He added, "Beyond simply improving transportation convenience, we will strengthen economic and social connections between the two regions and create synergies in various fields."
District Mayor Lee Pil-hyung said, "Since connection is key for cities, it was a meaningful occasion to work with Namyangju City, sharing the same direction, to improve the railway network in Seoul and the metropolitan area." He added, "With this agreement, Dongdaemun District will spare no effort to ensure the successful promotion of the Gyeongchun Line direct connection project and the construction of the single-track railway on the Suin-Bundang Line in cooperation with Namyangju City."
Namyangju City and Dongdaemun District plan to focus on proposals to related organizations to bring about positive changes such as increasing accessibility and convenience between the northern and southern parts of Seoul and the metropolitan area.
