In the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education by-election held on the 16th, progressive candidate Jeong Geun-sik's victory was confirmed. Upon confirmation of his win, Jeong stated, "The victory of Seoul education will be made together with the citizens."
As of 11:13 PM during the vote count that began at 8 PM that day, Jeong had secured 51.95% (544,721 votes), leading conservative candidate Jo Jeon-hyeok, who had 44.36%, by 7.59 percentage points. Candidate Yoon Ho-sang was recorded at 3.67%.
At the same time, 54.59% of the votes had been counted. Out of a total electorate of 4,086,645, 1,066,582 people voted.
Jeong released a statement saying, "The unification during this election process was more important and dramatic than ever before," adding, "It was because of the decisions made by those who quietly devoted themselves while protecting each educational site that we could achieve today's victory."
He also emphasized, "Recently, the Nobel Prize in Literature awarded to author Han Kang holds great significance for us," and stated, "Education that fosters a fierce historical consciousness and cultural and artistic sensitivity, like his works, is the key to brightening Seoul's future."
Jeong said, "Since this is a by-election, I will enter the Office of Education immediately after finishing the surrounding arrangements and start Seoul education together with the citizens," and added, "I will listen to your voices and create a proud Seoul education."
Once confirmed, the new Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education Superintendent is scheduled to start work at the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education from the 17th.
