Gwangju City Launches 'Labor Rights Protection Committee' on the 16th

Appointed 13 Members Including Major Trade Unions, Academia, and Business Sector

The 'Workers' Rights Protection Committee' aimed at protecting and promoting the rights of workers in the Gwangju area will be launched on the 16th.

Gwangju City announced on the 15th that it will newly form and launch the Workers' Rights Protection Committee in accordance with the 'Gwangju City Labor Basic Ordinance' enacted and enforced on July 1.

The committee is composed of a total of 13 members: four representatives from the labor sector including the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions and the Federation of Korean Trade Unions; three representatives from the management sector including the Gwangju Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Gwangju Employers Federation, and the Gwangju branch of the Korea Women Entrepreneurs Association; two representatives from academia including Honam University and Hwasun Chonnam National University Hospital; as well as council member An Pyeonghwan of Gwangju City Council, Gwangju Transportation Corporation, Gwangju Regional Employment and Labor Office, and the Gwangju Labor and Job Policy Officer. The term of office is two years, from the 16th until October 15, 2026.

The committee deliberates and advises on major policies to protect and promote workers' rights. Its functions mainly include establishing, modifying, and evaluating the implementation of basic labor policy plans, promoting labor welfare projects, providing labor policy consultation, operating the Labor Rights Center, and building cooperative labor relations. In particular, with the participation of the two major trade unions, it is expected to reflect the diverse voices from the field in response to the rapidly changing labor environment, enabling effective protection of workers' rights.

Shin Changho, Gwangju City's Labor and Job Policy Officer, said, "With the launch of the Workers' Rights Protection Committee, we will establish labor policies that capture the voices from the labor field and do our best to promote workers' rights and improve the labor environment."
