▲ Gyeongbuk No. 1 in the ‘2023 Traffic Culture Index Survey’ Results

As a result of these efforts, Gumi City ranked first in Gyeongbuk Province in the ‘2023 Traffic Culture Index Survey’ conducted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. Among 229 local governments nationwide, Gumi ranked 8th nationally, rising 19 places compared to last year. This is evaluated as a result of the city's continuous traffic safety measures leading to tangible changes.

▲ Establishment of Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) to Alleviate Traffic Congestion and Enhance Safety

Additionally, through the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport’s local government ITS construction support project, the city invested 18.4 billion KRW over five years (including 10.3 billion KRW in national funds) to build an Intelligent Transportation System (ITS). The emergency vehicle priority signal system secured the golden time. After being piloted on roads around Gumi Fire Station in 2023, it was expanded citywide this year. Information collected from advanced traffic systems such as smart intersection systems is also utilized in establishing traffic policies, including road planning and signal coordination.

▲ Gyeongbuk’s First Time-Based Speed Limit Operation in Children Protection Zones

The time-based speed limit policy in children protection zones, introduced for the first time in Gyeongbuk, is also notable. In September, the city adjusted the speed limit in the children protection zone in front of Wangsang Elementary School to 40 km/h from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., and raised it to 50 km/h from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. This measure protects children’s safety while improving vehicle flow by time of day, reducing inconvenience for citizens and providing a better traffic environment.

▲ Joint Crackdown on Illegal Acts by Two-Wheeled Vehicles and Operation of Rear Enforcement Cameras

The city has also strengthened joint crackdowns on illegal acts by two-wheeled vehicles. Gumi conducts surprise joint inspections with related agencies to eradicate reckless driving such as drunk driving and noise-causing two-wheeled vehicles. Rear enforcement cameras are installed in tourist spots and areas with frequent complaints to monitor signal violations, speeding, and failure to wear helmets.

▲ Gyeongbuk’s First ‘Smart Non-Stop Parking Lot’ Integrated Parking Information System Established

In July, Gumi City introduced Gyeongbuk’s first integrated parking information system, providing real-time parking information and pre-registration services for discounts, enhancing the convenience of public parking lots. Non-stop systems, wallet-free parking lots, and QR code prepayment services are scheduled to be provided by October, expected to greatly increase citizens’ parking satisfaction.

▲ Expansion of City Bus Routes at Sagok Station Following the Opening of Daegu Metropolitan Railroad

With the opening of the Daegu Metropolitan Railroad in December, the city will expand city bus routes centered on Sagok Station and establish a metropolitan transfer system. In particular, accessibility to city buses inside Sagok Station will be improved, and bus information guides will be installed to enhance citizens’ convenience in using public transportation.
