Goyang Special City, Gyeonggi Province (Mayor Lee Dong-hwan) announced on the 15th that the largest reading culture festival, the ‘2024 Goyang Reading Festival,’ will be held for two days from the 25th to the 26th at Aram Nuri Library, Hwajeong Library, and Ilsan Lake Park.

Under the theme of ‘Exist, Read, Connect,’ this event will feature various programs such as lectures, book talks, reading forums, performances, and hands-on experiences, organized through collaboration among Goyang City libraries and various local entities in the fields of reading, culture, education, and arts.

On the first day at Aram Nuri Library, there will be a lecture by actor and author Cha In-pyo, who wrote “If We Look at the Same Star,” a required book in the Korean Studies Department at Oxford University in the UK. At the Goyang Reading Forum, experts from the reading and education sectors will gather to engage in lively discussions and proposals under the theme “Directions of Local Government Reading Policies Responding to Social Change.”

On the second day at Hanul Plaza in Ilsan Lake Park, the event will kick off with congratulatory performances of Korean traditional music and popera, followed by a traditional fairy tale reading play by a professional voice actor and a citizen reading session to enliven the atmosphere. Poets Oh Eun and Kim Min-jung will share stories about poetry during their book talk.

On the lawn of Hanul Plaza, a lakeside outdoor library will be set up with books, bean bags, and parasols. There will also be a yoga experience program with novelist Choi Jeong-hwa, author of “Yoga for Desk Workers,” and a large paper house-making experience for families.

The Reading Entertainment Hall, enjoyable for the whole family, will offer recreational activities such as group board games and reading OX quizzes, combining play with reading activities to create a joyful learning experience.

Various experience booths organized in cooperation with the municipal libraries and partner organizations will also be showcased, including book upcycling by Gyeonggi Goyang Office of Education, face painting by Goyang Arts High School, masterpiece creation by Goyang Children’s Museum, a dementia-related book exhibition by Ilsan Dong-gu Public Health Center, and reading board game experiences by Goyang City librarians.

At the Book Market, 10 local bookstores and publishers will participate to introduce and sell unique books.

A Goyang City official said, “We hope that the 2024 Goyang Reading Festival, the region’s representative book festival, will be an opportunity to experience and communicate new experiences related to books and reading.”
