On the 19th at 11 AM near Jungnangcheon under Eungbonggyo Bridge: Reviving the historical tradition of the village where Eungbang was established as a falconry hunting ground
Only two falconry demonstrations by Eungsa nationwide, traditional game experiences, celebratory performances, DJ shows, food markets, and various attractions... Unique neighborhood festivals like ‘Salgunamugol Village Festival’ and ‘Maebongsan Trail Walking Festival’ offer autumn vibes
Seongdong-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Jung Won-oh) will hold the village’s representative festival, the “4th Eungbong Falconry Festival,” in Eungbong-dong on the 19th.
Organized by the Eungbong-dong Village Festival Promotion Committee, the falconry festival, held since 2021, is based on the historical fact that Eungbongsan Mountain was once a falconry site where the Eungbang (falcon breeding and hunting office) was established.
The name Eungbong-dong itself comes from Eungbongsan Mountain, which uses the character for hawk (鷹, Eung) meaning that many hawks lived there.
The Eungbong Falconry Festival will be held from 11 a.m. under the Eungbonggyo Bridge near Jungnangcheon Stream, where intangible cultural asset holder Park Yong-soon, a falconer, will demonstrate falconry. A falconer, or Eungsa, is a hunter who trains and hunts with falcons, and there are only two such individuals nationwide. This unique spectacle, rarely seen in the urban center of Seoul, is expected to captivate visitors.
Traditional game experiences, celebratory performances, DJ shows, and food markets will also be operated, providing programs suitable for all generations to enjoy together, enhancing the festival’s excitement.
The Eungbong-dong Village Festival Promotion Committee (Chairman Park Il) expressed hopes that the festival will continue the fading village traditions and become a harmonious event where residents can come together and communicate.
In addition, Seongdong-gu will host various neighborhood festivals to welcome autumn. On October 19, the same day as the Eungbong Falconry Festival, the Haengdang 2-dong “Salgunamugol Village Festival,” Oksu-dong’s “Maebongsan Dulle-gil Walking Festival,” and Wangsimni 2-dong’s “Muhakbong Harmony Festival” will be held.
On October 26, Yongdap-dong’s “Yongdap Village Festival and Maehwa Village Proclamation Ceremony,” Geumho 4-ga-dong’s “Museomak Harmony Festival,” Wangsimni Doseon-dong’s “Ginkgo Festival,” and Songjeong-dong’s “Songjeong Village Autumn Foliage Music Concert” are scheduled, promising festivals that everyone, regardless of age or gender, can enjoy while feeling the autumn atmosphere.
Jung Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, stated, “Through the ‘Eungbong Falconry Festival,’ I hope we can reflect on our village’s traditions and raise awareness about the protection of birds of prey and the conservation of the natural environment.” He added, “We will continue to support diverse festivals that highlight the unique characteristics of each neighborhood so that they can be loved and cherished by residents for a long time.”
