The governments of South Korea, the United States, and Japan are reportedly pushing to hold a trilateral summit in December.

On the 14th, Japanese local media such as JNN cited diplomatic sources saying that a South Korea-U.S.-Japan summit is being considered to be held in late December in Hawaii or California, USA. However, they also added that there remains a possibility of holding the trilateral summit in conjunction with an international conference scheduled in South America next month.

The governments of South Korea, the U.S., and Japan are scheduled to hold a foreign vice ministers' meeting in Seoul on the 16th. At this meeting, they are expected to discuss the schedule for holding the trilateral summit in connection with multilateral summits such as the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Peru and the Group of Twenty (G20) summit in Brazil next month.

This is expected to be the first trilateral summit attended by Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru since his inauguration on the 1st.

JNN forecasted, "At the trilateral summit, the three countries are likely to reaffirm the importance of cooperation even after U.S. President Joe Biden's term ends in January next year," adding, "They will also exchange views on various issues, including responses related to North Korea, which is advancing its nuclear and missile development."

On the 12th, a South Korean presidential office official revealed that President Biden proposed holding a South Korea-U.S.-Japan summit within this year to President Yoon Suk-yeol.

Previously, in August last year, the leaders of South Korea, the U.S., and Japan agreed to hold at least one trilateral summit annually during their meeting at Camp David, the U.S. presidential retreat near Washington, D.C.
