Three-Year Plan Established for Age-Friendly City Development with Various Senior Welfare Projects Planned

Gwangjin-gu (District Mayor Kim Kyung-ho) has obtained certification for joining the World Health Organization (WHO) Global Network for Age-friendly Cities and Communities (GNAFCC).

The Global Network for Age-friendly Cities and Communities (GNAFCC) is a worldwide project promoted by WHO since 2006 to effectively respond to the rapidly aging population globally. Currently, over 1,540 cities from 52 countries around the world have joined, and Gwangjin-gu officially received its membership certification this September after submitting its application in June and undergoing evaluations in areas such as community care.

Gwangjin-gu has continuously made efforts to build an urban environment where senior citizens can live healthy and vibrant lives.

First, last year, the district fully revised the "Seoul Metropolitan Gwangjin-gu Elderly Welfare and Age-friendly City Basic Ordinance" and conducted a research project for creating an age-friendly city. Based on the results, the district has continuously promoted various elderly welfare support projects to address the aging issues identified.

Additionally, in August, Gwangjin-gu established a three-year plan (2024?2026) for creating an age-friendly city under the vision of "Gwangjin-gu, a Leading Age-friendly City Where All Generations Are Happy."

Going forward, the district will implement more effective and practical welfare projects covering all aspects of elderly welfare, including ▲ community care ▲ support for social participation activities ▲ health and housing.

Gwangjin-gu plans to regularly monitor these projects and actively cooperate with Seoul city and other local governments to accelerate the creation of an age-friendly city environment.

Kim Kyung-ho, Mayor of Gwangjin-gu, stated, “This WHO Global Network for Age-friendly Cities and Communities membership certification is an international recognition of the efforts made by Gwangjin-gu and its residents to create a city where senior citizens are happy. We will continue to discover and promote various projects to improve elderly welfare and build a more comprehensive welfare system.”

Meanwhile, on the 11th, Gwangjin-gu held a “Certification Ceremony for Joining the Global Network for Age-friendly Cities and Communities” to share its achievements so far and actively encourage the interest of Gwangjin-gu residents in creating an age-friendly city.
