Emart to Plant 15,000 Trees in Mongolia Over 5 Years

As Part of the 'Forest Tomorrow' Initiative

Emart announced on the 15th that it conducted tree planting at Terelj National Park on the 10th to coincide with Mongolia's Arbor Day.

Starting with this planting, Emart plans to create the "Forest of Tomorrow" by planting 15,000 trees over an area of 4.4 hectares over the next five years.

The Forest of Tomorrow planting involved Emart's ESG Management Promotion Team, officials from the Asian Forest Cooperation Organization (AFoCO), and representatives from the nonprofit organization Mirae Forest. Additionally, 40 employees from four Emart stores located in Mongolia participated in planting trees to help create a green forest.

This is part of Emart's "Forest Tomorrow" initiative. Emart is directly creating forests on sites that require tree planting and conducting ESG activities that contribute to addressing the climate crisis.

Since May of this year, the Forest Tomorrow project has been launched in Mongolia to prevent desertification. Emart signed a project agreement for "Forest Tomorrow Mongolia" with AFoCO and Mirae Forest to proceed with creating green forests. Currently, Mongolia faces a shortage of forest cover on 76.9% of its land due to rapid desertification.

For the creation of the Forest of Tomorrow, Emart selected species suitable for Mongolia's climate and environment. Representative species planted include Siberian pine, Siberian apricot, and Cornus controversa, which grow well even in dry soil. This year, Emart plans to conduct biodiversity research in collaboration with Mongolia National University. Funding was secured by donating a portion of the sales from No Brand's "Tree Planting Toilet Paper."

Emart plans to establish a public-private cooperation system through the launch of the Emart Volunteer Corps in Mongolia by 2025 and will continue steady tree planting and management. By 2027, Emart aims to create various social values, including conducting local forestry education programs.

Lee Kyung-hee, Executive Director in charge of ESG at Emart, said, "Forest Tomorrow is a long-term ESG project that Emart is promoting. Through various planting activities, we aim to contribute to responding to the climate crisis and preserving biodiversity."
