Ranked 18th Last Year, Up 5 Spots
Yeungnam University (President Choi Oechul) has ranked 13th in Korea in the 2024-2025 Best Global Universities Rankings announced by U.S. News & World Report. This is a significant rise of five places from last year's 18th position.
U.S. News & World Report is an American weekly news magazine focusing on education, politics, and economics. It began evaluating universities in the United States in 1983 and has been publishing global university rankings since 2014. In its latest release, U.S. News & World Report ranked up to 2,250 universities worldwide. Yeungnam University climbed five spots domestically to 13th place, ranked 216th in Asia, and 743rd globally (compared to 18th in Korea, 244th in Asia, and 912th globally in 2022), demonstrating a remarkable upward trend.
The evaluation criteria of U.S. News & World Report include 13 categories such as research reputation, number of publications, citations per paper, number and proportion of highly cited papers, and international collaboration in joint publications. Among these, Yeungnam University rose 184 places in the global ranking for the international collaboration-joint publication indicator, achieving 86th place worldwide. The proportion of papers in the top 10% by citation frequency increased by 395 spots, citations per paper rose by 128 places, and the number of publications indicator improved by 28 places, showing significant progress in multiple metrics.
Earlier, in the 2024 Leiden Ranking announced in July, Yeungnam University made a significant leap in the overall ranking, entering the national TOP 5 for the first time. In particular, in the field of Mathematics & Computer Science, the university maintained its position as number one in Korea (131st in the world, 39th in Asia) for the tenth consecutive year, demonstrating world-class research capabilities. Especially notable, Yeungnam University showed a dramatic rise in the Life & Earth Sciences category, ranking 365th globally, 72nd in Asia, and 2nd in Korea (compared to 839th globally, 251st in Asia, and 9th domestically last year), surprising the academic community. Additionally, in the Natural Sciences & Engineering field, the university improved from 17th to 11th place domestically, further proving its research excellence. The Leiden Ranking evaluates universities worldwide based on the qualitative level of their publications, indicating the university's outstanding research capabilities.
Choi Oechul, President of Yeungnam University, stated, "Yeungnam University's level of education and research is being highly recognized by globally credible university evaluation organizations," adding, "This is the very capability and clear global competitiveness that Yeungnam University possesses. We will continue to support education and research to reach a world-class level in all academic fields."
