Seoul Semiconductor is showing strong performance. The news that it has won all 16 lawsuits over seven years against the Taiwanese LED company 'Everlight,' culminating in a ruling by the European Patent Office's Board of Appeal, appears to be influencing its stock price.
As of 9:56 a.m. on the 14th, Seoul Semiconductor is trading at 10,110 KRW, up 15.43% from the previous day.
According to industry sources, Seoul Semiconductor explained that its No Wire LED technology has been recognized with patents in all European countries. No Wire LED technology involves manufacturing LED elements without wires and packaging, offering advantages such as ultra-compact size and high efficiency. This technology has been used in headlamps of vehicles like the Genesis GV80 and Audi A4.
Major foreign media reported on the 13th (local time) that the Unified Patent Court (UPC) in Europe ruled to ban the sale of LED products infringing Seoul Semiconductor's patent rights in eight European countries, following a patent lawsuit Seoul Semiconductor recently filed against Germany's major online retailer Expert eCommerce.
According to the ruling, Expert eCommerce is prohibited from selling the infringing products in Germany, Austria, Belgium, France, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and Sweden, and must recall and dispose of all related LED products already sold. Expert eCommerce is the third-largest retailer in Europe, with annual sales reaching $14 billion (approximately 18.9 trillion KRW).
Although the exact volume of LED products to be banned and disposed of has not yet been confirmed, foreign media reported that considering Expert eCommerce's sales, the scale is expected to be 'substantial.'
Earlier this year, Seoul Semiconductor also filed a patent lawsuit related to smart lighting technology against the global IT giant Amazon, attracting attention both domestically and internationally. Major foreign media are also showing interest in the lawsuit against Amazon. When asked about the lawsuit with Amazon during the earnings presentation in August, CEO Lee Jung-hoon said, “It seems it will be resolved well.”
