Yangcheon-gu, Seoul (Mayor Lee Gi-jae) announced on the 14th that it was selected as an 'Excellent' local government by receiving a score of 77.9, higher than the national average (72.4 points), in the 2023 Children's Dietary Safety Index survey conducted by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety. This is the second highest among metropolitan district governments and the highest score among Seoul's district governments.
The 'Children's Dietary Safety Index' is an indicator to objectively verify and evaluate the safety and nutritional level of children's diets. It is surveyed every three years across 228 local governments nationwide in three areas: dietary safety, dietary nutrition, and dietary awareness and practice.
The district was highly evaluated in the fields of dietary safety and nutrition, recognized for its best efforts in managing the safety and nutrition of children's preferred foods and group meals. To improve the hygiene and nutrition management level of children's meal centers, Yangcheon-gu operates the Yangcheon-gu Children's Meal Management Support Center, conducting 2 to 6 rounds of visits and inspections annually at about 250 children's meal centers in the district and holding parent cooking classes to provide nutritional recipes.
In addition, to improve the food sales environment around schools, a Children's Food Safety Protection Zone has been designated, and dedicated managers have been selected to conduct quarterly inspections of about 160 children's preferred food preparation and sales businesses within the protection zone.
Based on the results of this dietary safety index evaluation, the district plans to strengthen the management system for vulnerable areas and continue efforts to improve the nutritional and safety levels of children's diets.
Mayor Lee Gi-jae said, "Since children's dietary habits are directly related to the healthy growth of our children, we will continue to create a hygienic and safe meal environment through systematic nutrition management programs and do our best for the healthy growth of children in the district."
