Selection of Designer for Sports Center and Children's Park at Bangbae 5 District Donation Facility

Comprehensive Gymnasium with 8-Lane Swimming Pool
Intercard Architects Selected as First Place
Facility Open for All Citizens' Use

A multipurpose sports center with a 50m 8-lane swimming pool and a children's park will be created on the site of the donation facility in Bangbae 5 District.

On the 14th, Seoul City announced that Intercard Architects Office (Song Minjun)'s 'SEOUL TOPOGRAPHY' was selected as the first place designer for the Seoul multipurpose sports center and children's park to be built on the donation facility site of the Bangbae 5 District housing reconstruction maintenance project.

This project will be developed on a total floor area of 15,000㎡ in the area of 974-3 Bangbae-dong, with a total project cost of approximately 74.3 billion KRW.

After announcing the design competition in July, Seoul City conducted a technical review to check for violations of laws and guidelines, proceeded with the first round of judging to select the final five proposals, and then selected the first-place work among a total of 35 entries through the second round of judging. The first-place winner is granted the priority negotiation right for the design contract.

The first-place design team will be finally selected as the designer through the resolution process of the general meeting of the Bangbae 5 District housing reconstruction maintenance project association in accordance with the Urban and Residential Environment Maintenance Act.

Intercard Architects Office won the Grand Prize at the 2019 Korea Architecture Culture Awards and the Best Award at the Seoul Metropolitan Government Architecture Awards in the same year for the Seosomun Holy Ground History Museum. They have also been responsible for designing public buildings such as Bukahyeon Cultural and Sports Center, Hwikyung Smile Daycare Center, Dohwa-dong Community Center, and Sinsu-dong Community Center.

The winning design reduced the burden of the potentially massive building by wrapping it with a sloped roof and minimized excavation to connect the slope differences with the surrounding parks through the building. It received high praise for proposing a rich public space by planning a three-dimensional lounge connecting all floors of the building.

The city plans to develop the multipurpose sports center as a facility not only for local residents but also for all citizens to use together.

Im Chang-su, Director of Future Space Planning, said, "The design competition for the Seoul multipurpose sports center and children's park is the third donation public facility design competition promoted by Seoul City, and it was a challenging task to plan a large-scale public facility on a harsh site condition. We will continue to provide administrative support so that donation facilities can become public facilities that contribute to the valuable daily lives of all citizens."
