Yonsei University has decided to award novelist Han Kang (54) an honorary doctorate and is considering the establishment of a literary museum in his honor following his Nobel Prize in Literature win. According to Yonsei University on the 11th, the Department of Korean Language and Literature faculty meeting decided to confer an honorary doctorate on Han Kang or appoint him as a professor.

Additionally, plans for establishing a specialized graduate school focused on creation and translation related to the Han Kang Literary Museum are being discussed. The university is also internally reviewing the possibility of holding special exhibitions or showcases dedicated to Han Kang. Through this, lectures aimed at students and the public, as well as academic conferences examining Han Kang’s literary position,

are also planned, with efforts expected to begin as early as this semester.


Han Kang entered Yonsei University’s Department of Korean Language and Literature in 1989 and graduated in 1993. She also earned a master’s degree from the graduate school. Her master’s thesis was titled "Yi Sang’s Painting and Literary World," in which Han Kang analyzed how Yi Sang’s aesthetic autonomy and self-awareness influenced literary creation.


Meanwhile, news of Han Kang’s Nobel Prize in Literature win was met with great congratulations among Yonsei alumni. Yoon Dong-seop, president of Yonsei University, conveyed a congratulatory message, saying, "The news of the first Korean Nobel Prize in Literature winner is a great source of pride for Yonsei people." Yonsei Chunchu published about 1,000 extra editions in response to the news of Han Kang’s Nobel Prize.
