Body Bag Found During Residential Leak Repair Work
A man in his 50s from Geoje, Gyeongnam, who killed his cohabiting girlfriend, placed her body in a travel suitcase, poured cement over it, and secretly buried it on the rooftop floor, was arrested and indicted on charges of murder and violation of the Narcotics Control Act (psychotropic substances) after 16 years.
On the 11th, Yonhap News reported that the Criminal Division 2 of the Tongyeong Branch of Changwon District Prosecutors' Office (Chief Prosecutor Song In-ho) indicted the man in his 50s, identified as A, on charges including murder.
A is accused of killing his cohabiting girlfriend B (then in her 30s) in October 2008 at a multi-family house in Geoje City, Gyeongnam, placing her body in a travel suitcase, and burying it by pouring cement on the rooftop of the residence.
According to the prosecution, around October 2008, in the rooftop room of a multi-family house in Geoje City, the defendant A got into a verbal argument with the victim B, with whom he was in a romantic relationship at the time. In anger, he picked up a ceramic pot lid from the kitchen and struck the victim B's head multiple times, killing her (murder).
Additionally, A is also charged with violating the Narcotics Control Act (psychotropic substances) for purchasing 0.5g of methamphetamine in the Yangsan City area of Gyeongnam around August 30 and using methamphetamine three times until September 18. A had lived in the house where the crimes were committed for about eight years until his arrest in 2016 for drug use.
This crime was uncovered after 16 years when a worker performing concrete structure demolition for leak repairs in August discovered the travel suitcase containing the body.
Following this, the police formed a dedicated investigation team and confirmed the identity of B through fingerprint and DNA tests on the remains found on the body. The police also confirmed that B had been reported missing in 2011 by her mother and launched an investigation, leading to A's arrest last month.
During the police investigation, A confessed to all the crimes. He reportedly stated that the crime occurred after a verbal dispute over a romantic issue with B at the time.
The prosecution conducted supplementary investigations (including integrated psychological analysis by the Supreme Prosecutors' Office and video-recorded interrogations) and indicted A on the 11th.
Immediately after the victim's body was discovered, the prosecution and police established a constant communication system and demonstrated organic cooperation through DNA analysis, various warrant requests, and legal reviews. Subsequently, they swiftly apprehended the defendant A and uncovered the truth behind the murder case that had been buried for 16 years.
