[2024 National Audit] Head of Korea Meteorological Administration: "All Citizens Feel the Climate Crisis... Developing AI Prediction Technology"

Jang Dong-eon, the Commissioner of the Korea Meteorological Administration, stated on the 11th, "Abnormal weather phenomena are occurring frequently, making forecasting more challenging," and added, "We will accelerate the development of the next-generation Korean numerical weather prediction model and simultaneously develop forecasting technologies utilizing advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI)."


At the National Assembly's Environment and Labor Committee audit on the same day, Commissioner Jang said, "Due to climate change, abnormal weather phenomena that we have never experienced before are appearing more frequently and more extremely, threatening the lives of the people."

Commissioner Jang said, "During this year's monsoon season, all citizens felt the climate crisis through record-breaking heavy rains and the intense heatwave that continued through the Chuseok holiday," and added, "We are taking on a greater sense of responsibility in this era of climate crisis."


He also stated, "As the agency responsible for overseeing and supporting climate crisis monitoring and forecasting, we aim to strengthen scientific national responses to the climate crisis in accordance with the enforcement of the Climate Change Monitoring and Forecasting Act," and said, "We will do our utmost to protect the lives and safety of the people on the front lines of responding to the climate crisis."
