The Personal Information Protection Commission has imposed fines totaling 25.7 billion KRW over the past four years for personal information leakage incidents caused by hacking.
According to the office of Cho Seung-rae, a member of the National Assembly's Political Affairs Committee from the Democratic Party of Korea, the Personal Information Protection Commission has handled 148 cases of personal information leakage due to hacking from August 2020 to the present and imposed fines on 62 cases amounting to approximately 25.7 billion KRW.
Of the 148 cases, 129 occurred in private companies, and 19 in public institutions.
The company that received the largest fine was Golfzon, which leaked personal information of about 2.21 million people and was fined 7.5 billion KRW in May. LG Uplus leaked personal information of about 290,000 people and was fined 6.8 billion KRW in July last year.
The public institution with the highest fine was the Korea National Council on Social Welfare, which leaked personal information of 1.35 million people and was recently fined 480 million KRW.
Representative Cho stated, "In response to increasingly sophisticated hacking techniques, the Personal Information Protection Commission should thoroughly conduct personal information protection consulting and research countermeasures."
