The Disaster Management Evaluation has been conducted since 2005 and targets 338 organizations including central government ministries, public institutions, and local governments across six areas: common, prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery. The evaluation aims to improve the national level of disaster management.

This year's evaluation shifted from a performance-centered assessment to a performance and capability-centered assessment. Through in-depth interviews led by experts, the decision-making and situational judgment abilities of agency heads and deputy heads responsible for overall safety policies were evaluated.

Gangwon Province achieved excellent results in all 42 indicators across the six areas. In particular, it excelled in strengthening safety management for vulnerable groups, improving crisis management manuals, and assigning roles within disaster response task forces. It also received high scores for demonstrating outstanding response capabilities in actual disaster situations.

Additionally, among the 18 cities and counties in the province, five?Chuncheon-si, Gangneung-si, Pyeongchang-gun, Jeongseon-gun, and Yangyang-gun?were selected as excellent institutions. Pyeongchang-gun received the Presidential Commendation, and Yangyang-gun was awarded the Prime Minister's Commendation.

Gangwon Province plans to systematically strengthen disaster management and response by utilizing last year's evaluation results when preparing for the '2025 Disaster Management Evaluation,' disseminating best practices to each department and city/county, and improving and supplementing any shortcomings.

Son Chang-hwan, Director of the Gangwon Province Disaster Safety Office, stated, "It is an honor to achieve excellent results in the Disaster Management Evaluation for two consecutive years," and added, "We will continue to do our best to strengthen Gangwon's specialized disaster management system and public-private cooperation framework so that residents can enjoy a safe and happy daily life."
