Foreigners Say 'Bye Korea' for 2 Consecutive Months... Bonds Receive Love Calls

Foreign investors sold a net amount exceeding 7.3 trillion won in the domestic stock market last month. This marks the second consecutive month of net selling following August.


According to the "September 2024 Foreign Securities Investment Trends" released by the Financial Supervisory Service on the 10th, foreign investors net sold 7.361 trillion won worth of domestically listed stocks last month. They net sold 7.905 trillion won in the KOSPI market and net bought 545 billion won in the KOSDAQ market.


Foreign investors recorded net selling for two consecutive months following August. They had maintained a net buying trend for nine consecutive months until July but shifted to net selling in August.


By country, France (800 billion won) and Norway (400 billion won) showed net buying. The United States (-2.8 trillion won) and Luxembourg (-1.6 trillion won) recorded net selling.


As of the end of last month, the scale of domestically listed stocks held by foreign investors was 746.94 trillion won (28.0% of the market capitalization).


In the bond market, foreign investors recorded net investment for two consecutive months by purchasing 3.63 trillion won worth of listed bonds. Foreign investors net bought 12.091 trillion won in listed bonds and received 8.462 trillion won upon maturity.


They mainly made net investments in government bonds (1.6 trillion won) and Monetary Stabilization Bonds (1.6 trillion won). The outstanding balance of listed bonds held by foreign investors was 263.4 trillion won (10.3% of the outstanding balance).
