Rice Farming Learning Site under Yeongdong 4-gyo Bridge Embankment on the 15th

"Harvesting Rice at Yangjaecheon"... Gangnam-gu Autumn Harvest Experience Event Children are experiencing the threshing process at the rice farming learning center. Provided by Gangnam-gu.

Gangnam-gu, Seoul, will hold a "Traditional Rice Farming Autumn Harvest Experience Event" at 11 a.m. on the 15th at the Yangjaecheon Rice Farming Learning Center (near Yeongdong 4 Bridge).

Since 2003, Gangnam-gu has been operating a 1,410㎡ rice farming learning center on the right bank floodplain between Yeongdong 4 Bridge and Yeongdong 5 Bridge along Yangjaecheon, providing residents with the opportunity to experience everything from rice planting to harvesting. This event will also be attended by 200 residents, including toddlers and elementary school students, who will have the chance to experience the disappearing traditional culture and learn about the ecological value of Yangjaecheon.

At this autumn harvest event, the rice planted in May will be harvested using traditional methods. Participants will cut the rice with sickles and experience threshing using traditional farming tools such as the holtae (an old agricultural tool for threshing rice) and the foot-operated cylindrical thresher. They will carry rice bundles with a jige (traditional Korean carrying frame) and tie rice straw, feeling the autumn harvest atmosphere of rural areas. The harvested rice will be dried and milled before being donated to local welfare facilities.

Before the rice harvesting, a nongak band will perform pungmulnori to celebrate the abundant harvest, and photos highlighting the ecological value of the Yangjaecheon ecological stream will be exhibited. For more details about the event, please contact the Parks and Greenery Division by phone or check the Seoul Metropolitan Government Public Service Reservation website.

Cho Sung-myeong, the district mayor, stated, "This is a valuable opportunity for children in the city to observe the ecological environment of rice paddies and rice through rice farming experiences and to directly experience traditional farming methods." He added, "We will continue to operate various experience programs to widely promote the ecological value of Yangjaecheon."
