The four-lane expansion of Local Road No. 15 between Beopseong and Hongnong in Yeonggwang, Jeollanam-do, will be fully opened at 5 p.m. on the 9th. With a total project cost of 94.9 billion KRW, the existing 5.6 km two-lane road section has been widened to four lanes. The project was completed nine years after construction began.
An opening ceremony was held in advance on the afternoon of the 8th, one day before the opening. About 300 people attended the ceremony, including Kim Young-rok, Governor of Jeollanam-do, Lee Gae-ho, Member of the National Assembly, Jo Guk, leader of the Innovation Party, the acting mayor of Yeonggwang County, members of the Jeollanam-do Provincial Assembly, the head of the Hanbit Nuclear Power Plant in Yeonggwang, local residents, and construction officials.
With the upgrade from two lanes to four lanes, it is expected to alleviate chronic traffic congestion, and in the event of a disaster at the Hanbit Nuclear Power Plant, evacuation routes will be secured, easing the concerns of local residents and nuclear power plant personnel.
Additionally, the road is linked to major tourist attractions in the Yeonggwang area, which is expected to greatly contribute to revitalizing the local economy. It significantly improves accessibility to traditional fishing villages such as Beopseong Port, providing a more convenient transportation environment not only for local residents but also for tourists. Visitors enjoying drives along the Baeksu Coastal Road can now more easily enjoy the beautiful sunset views of the West Coast.
Governor Kim Young-rok said, “Yeonggwang has long been a place with beautiful natural scenery and a rich history, culture, and heritage. We expect that securing safe evacuation routes for the nuclear power plant and improving traffic conditions between Beopseong and Hongnong will greatly benefit the local economy.”
