IL Science Acquires 'Cellion,' Holding 10 Patent Technologies in the Mobility Sector

IL Science announced on the 8th that it will acquire Cellion, which holds 10 patented technologies in the mobility sector.

Founded in 2014, Cellion is an R&D and patent-based technology company supplying puddle lamps and interior lamps to global automakers such as Tesla, Porsche, and Volkswagen. Notably, it succeeded in developing the world's first system light-emitting diode (LED) with a built-in driver, enabling consistent luminance even under external impact and possessing technology that allows adjustment of color, color temperature, and brightness according to customer requirements.

With the acquisition of Cellion, IL Science will change its company name to ‘IL Cellion’ and internalize the latest surface mount technology (SMT) line and production technology. This enables vertically integrated, customer-oriented one-stop manufacturing from IL Science’s LED silicon lens production to IL Cellion’s SMT process and IL Mobility’s lamp cover injection molding assembly (A'ssy).

Based on its technological capabilities, Cellion achieved a 20-fold growth in revenue from 900 million KRW in 2015 to 18 billion KRW in 2023. During this period, it obtained the Supplier Quality (SQ) certification from Hyundai Motor Company and Kia, recognizing its productivity and quality technology in printed circuit board (PCB) manufacturing. The SQ certification is a system established by Hyundai and Kia to ensure the quality and reliability of their suppliers amid the electrification of vehicles. Companies that acquire this certification find it easier to secure various new orders and expand their global customer base.

Additionally, through chip-on-board (COB) and LED module circuit and PCB design technologies, Cellion can produce products optimized for key specifications such as power consumption and luminous flux requested by customers. The non-polar LED package for interior lights with LED lamp protection enables efficient heat dissipation, effectively controlling heat emission issues. Along with this, the technology possessed by IL Cellion allows the realization of products optimized for customer-required conditions, which is expected to maximize synergy among IL Group companies.

The completion of IL Science’s mobility value chain is expected to be a groundbreaking turning point in securing flexible responsiveness and strengthening competitiveness for customers. Furthermore, vertical integration is anticipated to improve cost ratios by reducing logistics and management expenses, contributing to increased performance.

An IL Science official stated, “Following the acquisition of IL Mobility at the end of last year, the acquisition of Cellion realizes the convergence of the lamp manufacturing industry for the first time in Korea by building a mobility value chain. As the electrification of vehicles increases the importance of various lamp functions and designs, we aim to become the Tesla of the silicon lens industry based on our unique LED silicon lens technology.”
