Gijang County in Busan Signs Letter of Intent for Friendly Exchange with Bungo Ono City, Japan

Establishment of Official Cooperation System to Develop 20-Year Friendship and Partnership

On the 8th, Gijang-gun, Busan (Governor Jung Jongbok) visited Bungo-ono City Hall in Oita Prefecture, Japan, and signed a Letter of Intent for Friendly Exchange with Bungo-ono City (Mayor Kawano Fumitoshi), establishing an official cooperation system between the two cities and launching full-scale exchange activities.

This signing of the Letter of Intent was arranged to promote mutual development between the two cities by strengthening the friendly and cooperative relationship with Bungo-ono City through expanded exchanges in various fields.


The signing ceremony was attended by Jung Jongbok, Governor of Gijang-gun, Kawano Fumitoshi, Mayor of Bungo-ono City, executives of the Korea-Japan Private Exchange Council, and other officials. The two cities formalized their exchange relationship and agreed to build a higher level of cooperation.


The Letter of Intent mainly aims to promote active exchanges in diverse fields such as economy, culture, arts, sports, and education, fostering mutual prosperity and development. In particular, the county plans to actively encourage cooperation with related organizations and the private sector while continuously seeking new opportunities for collaboration.


Through this exchange, the two cities are expected to achieve complementary development in various areas, including the economy and culture. With the official start of exchange relations, the possibility of developing into a sister-city partnership in the future has also been opened.


Governor Jung Jongbok said, "Through the signing of this Letter of Intent for Friendly Exchange, I hope that Gijang-gun and Bungo-ono City will solidify their cooperative relationship in various fields such as economy, culture, and arts, complement each other's shortcomings, and achieve joint development," adding, "We will actively strive to produce tangible results through practical exchanges and cooperation between the two cities in the future."


Bungo-ono City in Oita Prefecture, Japan, is known for its beautiful natural scenery such as Harajiri Falls, and its local economy is mainly based on agriculture and tourism.


Gijang-gun and Bungo-ono City have maintained a close relationship for over 20 years, starting with the declaration of friendly cooperation between Jangan-eup in Gijang-gun and Kiyokawa Village (merged into Bungo-ono City in 2005) in 2003. In 2023, Bungo-ono City proposed a sister-city partnership to Gijang-gun, accelerating discussions on inter-city exchange and cooperation, which eventually led to the signing of this Letter of Intent for Friendly Exchange after close consultations.
