Over 500 Attendees Including Mayor Park Hyungjun, Officials, Korean Language Organizations, Educators, and Civic Groups at City Hall on the 9th at 10 AM
Mayor Park: "Busan Must Preserve and Promote Hangeul to Become a True Global Hub City"
On October 9, at 10 a.m., Busan Metropolitan City will hold the “578th Hangul Day Celebration Ceremony” in the main auditorium of City Hall to commemorate the 578th anniversary of the proclamation of Hunminjeongeum and Hangul Day.
At the ceremony, over 500 citizens from various sectors?including Mayor Park Hyungjoon, heads of major institutions, the Busan Hangul Society and other Hangul-related organizations, figures from the education sector, and civic groups?will gather to celebrate Hangul Day.
The event will proceed for about 40 minutes in the following order: National Ceremony, screening of a celebratory video, reading of the Hunminjeongeum preface, awards for contributors to the development of Hangul, congratulatory address, commemorative choir performance, singing of the Hangul Day song, and three cheers of “manse.”
Notably, during the “Reading of the Hunminjeongeum Preface,” Lee Geunyeol, president of the Busan Hangul Society, along with three foreign students participating in the “Busan Outstanding Foreign Student Scholarship Program” run by the Busan Global City Foundation, will recite the preface together, highlighting the global stature of Hangul at the heart of the Korean Wave.
The three foreign students are On Yu (male, Equatorial Guinea), Aruzhan (female, Kazakhstan), and Anousak (male, Laos).
Additionally, ten individuals?including Park Seongeon, the longest-serving host of Busan MBC Radio’s “Jagalchi Ajimae,” who has contributed to the preservation and awareness of the Busan dialect?will be awarded certificates of appreciation for their contributions to the development of Hangul.
The Mayor’s Award will be presented to: Kang Myungsook and Kim Samhwan (Korean Calligraphy Research Association artists), Kim Joongsu and Kim Taewoo (professors at Pusan National University), and Park Seongeon (broadcaster). The Superintendent’s Award will go to: Choi Misoon (Yeonje Elementary School), Shin Seulgi (Myeongji Middle School), Kim Bokyung (Jeonggwan Middle School), Shin Wonki (Dongcheon High School), and Lee Sangeun (Centum Girls’ High School).
A variety of events will also take place around City Hall on this day to celebrate the 578th Hangul Day and provide citizens with meaningful experiences through a range of attractions and activities.
The Dong-A University Korean Language Culture Center will host the “18th Our Language and Script Love Festival” in the main auditorium and Nokum Square, featuring events such as the “Busan Dialect Competition” and “Hangul Five Senses Experience Booth.”
The Korean Calligraphy Research Association will also hold the “22nd Hangul Calligraphy Festival,” the “Korea-China Calligraphy Exchange Exhibition,” and the “Korean Calligraphy National Member Exhibition” in the exhibition hall on the second floor of City Hall.
In his congratulatory address, Mayor Park Hyungjoon is expected to state, “Busan is currently putting all its efforts into becoming a global hub city, a city at the center of the world. For Busan to truly become a global hub city, we must also strive to preserve and nurture Hangul, which lies at the heart of our identity. In the future, our city will use more beautiful pure Korean words when naming public places and buildings, and we will incorporate the aesthetic beauty of Hangul into the ‘Busan Design Innovation Strategy’ to make Busan an even more beautiful and welcoming place.”
