Lowering Barriers with Free Indoor Ramps... Guaranteeing Mobility Rights for Residents
Bridging Information Gaps through Expanded Distribution of 'TVs for the Visually and Hearing Impaired'
Free Rental of 'Manual Wheelchairs' for All Residents in Need... Available for Up to 2 Months
Yeongdeungpo-gu (Mayor Choi Ho-kwon) announced that it is creating an environment where all residents can live conveniently without discrimination through various welfare equipment support projects.
First, the district guarantees the mobility rights of people with disabilities by providing ‘indoor ramps’ free of charge. These ramps are high-quality assistive devices for people with disabilities selected by the Central Assistive Device Center, helping users move safely and freely indoors by eliminating the inconvenience of wheelchair wheels getting caught on door thresholds.
Through this project, the district distributed a total of 90 indoor ramps to local community service centers and disability welfare institutions, alleviating mobility difficulties for people with disabilities and creating a safe environment.
Additionally, the district is expanding the distribution of ‘customized TVs for people with visual and hearing impairments’ to bridge the information gap. These TVs offer various convenience features such as subtitle guidance, sign language interpretation, and audio description, enabling people with disabilities to access information more easily.
This project is jointly promoted by the Korea Communications Commission and the Viewer Media Foundation, targeting recipients of basic living subsidies, low-income groups registered with the Ministry of Health and Welfare as people with visual and hearing impairments, or those registered with the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs as individuals with visual or hearing disabilities.
The district actively participated in this project and identified more eligible recipients, taking the lead in resolving information inequality.
Furthermore, the district operates a ‘free manual wheelchair rental service’ for residents who have difficulty walking. This service is provided free of charge not only to people with disabilities and the elderly but also to residents who temporarily need a wheelchair due to accidents or other reasons, allowing them to use it without financial burden. Wheelchairs can be rented at 18 community service centers, Yeongdeungpo-gu Public Health Center, and disability welfare institutions within the district, and can be used free of charge for up to two months. For more details, residents can inquire at their local community service center or the Senior and Disabled Affairs Division of the district office.
In addition, the district recently supported people with disabilities to live safely and conveniently through the ‘smart voice recognition switch’ support project. It also continues various support projects for vulnerable groups, including the provision of assistive devices for people with disabilities, repair costs for electric mobility devices, and safety insurance enrollment.
Choi Ho-kwon, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu, said, “I hope this project will help guarantee the mobility rights and information accessibility of people with disabilities,” and added, “We will continue to discover various projects so that all residents can enjoy daily life without inconvenience and take the lead in realizing a barrier-free city.”
