Naver announced on the 7th that it will review compensation issues together with the media industry regarding articles used as training data for large language models (LLM).
Kim Suhyang, Executive Vice President of Naver News Service, appeared as a witness at the National Assembly’s Science, Technology, Information and Broadcasting Communications Committee audit on the same day and responded to the question, "Are you willing to compensate for data used as training data, especially newspaper articles?" by saying, "Compensation issues have not yet been clearly resolved overseas either," and added, "We will review this with the media industry."
When asked, "OpenAI in the United States has resolved copyright issues through agreements with several media outlets such as AP and the Financial Times (FT). Will Naver follow this model?" she replied, "We will consider it as a reference."
Earlier, OpenAI, the developer of the generative AI ChatGPT, had formed partnerships with AP, FT, and others for AI feature development. However, The New York Times (NYT) filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and others in December last year, claiming copyright infringement.
