Leaders of resource circulation in the Gwangju area, known as the "Earth Guardians," are taking the lead in realizing a resource-circulating city in Gwangju.

On the 7th, Gwangju City held a traveling roundtable meeting for "Recycling UP, Waste DOWN Gwangju" at the Chipeong-dong Administrative Welfare Center in Seo-gu. Following the meeting held in Dong-gu last August, the second roundtable in Seo-gu was attended by Mayor Kang Gi-jung, Seo-gu District Chief Kim Yi-gang, Seo-gu resource circulation managers, and about 50 residents.

During the meeting, after reports on the direction of the metropolitan resource recovery facility and Seo-gu’s 2045 carbon neutrality major policies, issues such as ▲climate crisis ▲the second fine dust problem, "microplastics" ▲South Korea as a major waste-exporting country were discussed. As a solution, the case of Jeju Island, which is turning resource recovery facilities and waste issues into job creation and regional development opportunities, was introduced. Participants proposed various ideas based on the polluter pays principle, discussing the necessity of waste source reduction, support for energy and resource reuse, recycling, remanufacturing, and resource recovery facilities.

Mayor Kang Gi-jung of Gwangju said, "I appreciate the hard work of the Earth Guardian resource circulation managers who are dedicated on the ground with the mission to 'protect the Earth.' We are experiencing the worst weather anomalies every year, which will have even greater impacts on our children and grandchildren. With the heart of a parent and the mindset that we are borrowing the Earth temporarily from future generations, we must unite our efforts to build a resource-circulating city. I ask Seo-gu to take the lead as a resource circulation leader."

Meanwhile, before the roundtable meeting, Mayor Kang, along with Seo-gu District Chief Kim Yi-gang, visited the carbon neutrality hub center called "Gamtanhaessneunga (家)." "Gamtanhaessneunga" is planned to be used as the nation’s first "Carbon Neutrality and Resource Circulation Experience Specialized Center" in the second annex of the community center and is scheduled to open within this month.
