Oh Seung-rok, Nowon-gu Mayor, Attends Madle Nongyo Rice Harvesting Experience and Jeonsugan Completion Ceremony

On the 7th at 11 a.m., Oh Seung-rok, the mayor of Nowon-gu, attended the 'Madeul Nongyo Rice Harvesting Experience and Transmission Center Completion Ceremony' held at the Madeul Nongyo Transmission Center within Madeul Sports Park.

Madeul Nongyo is a traditional farming song sung by farmers to boost their spirits while farming in the Madeul Plain before Nowon-gu transformed into an apartment complex area. It is currently the only remaining Nongyo in Seoul. The legacy is being preserved through the Madeul Nongyo Preservation Society (President Kim Wan-su, with about 50 members).

The district promoted the construction project of the transmission center to preserve and foster Madeul Nongyo as the existing center had aged. From January to August this year, the project was carried out, completing overall facility improvements.

The completion ceremony began with a pre-event performance of Madeul Nongyo, followed by a performance of Gumi Balgeng-i Deulsoli, an intangible cultural heritage of Gyeongsangbuk-do. Afterwards, students from Sangcheon Elementary School had the opportunity to experience rice harvesting and threshing firsthand. Through the process of cutting and threshing rice, the students learned about the importance of agricultural activities and the value of labor practiced by their ancestors, gaining insight into traditional farming culture.

The subsequent event was attended by about 100 people, including Oh Seung-rok, mayor of Nowon-gu, and city and district council members, proceeding in the order of ▲guest introductions ▲progress report ▲donation ceremony ▲congratulatory speeches ▲transmission center nameplate ceremony ▲commemorative photo session.

Oh Seung-rok, mayor of Nowon-gu, said, “I appreciate the efforts of the Madeul Nongyo Preservation Society to ensure that traditional culture continues,” adding, “Madeul Nongyo is a precious cultural heritage, and through the completion of this transmission center, I hope more residents and children will have opportunities to experience and learn about tradition.”
