Busan Elementary and Middle School Students Learn Filial Piety at Senior Centers

Operation of 'One Class, One Senior Center Filial Piety Experience Program'

Promoting School Character Education Linked with the Local Community

The Busan Metropolitan Office of Education is working to expand the foundation of character education by providing students with opportunities to experience filial piety and generational integration.

The Busan Office of Education announced on the 7th that it will operate the "One Class, One Senior Center Filial Piety Experience Learning" program at senior centers near schools for 16 classes and 370 elementary and middle school students until November 28.

This program is designed to promote proper values of filial piety and respect for elders among students through generational integration experiences, and to broaden the base of character education through activities that foster empathy between grandparents and grandchildren.

The Office of Education will run the program at nine senior centers located in Gijang-gun, Dong-gu, Dongnae-gu, Busanjin-gu, Buk-gu, Saha-gu, Seo-gu, Yeongdo-gu, and Haeundae-gu.

Students will receive prior education on order and etiquette, then visit the senior centers to participate in a half-day filial piety experience, including storytelling and hands-on activities.

First, they will take part in the "Storytelling Session," where they interview seniors about their lives and stories. They will also engage in the "Traditional Games" such as Gonggi-nori, Sangaji-nori, and Biseok-chigi, as well as "Emotional and Cooperative Activities" like making Obangsaek bracelets, Hanmaeum keychains, and Respect dolls, all as part of the "Hands-On Session."

Afterwards, students will distribute books containing the life stories of the seniors created during the "Storytelling Session," and exchange the results of their "Hands-On Session" activities in a "Sharing of Activity Outcomes" to conclude the experience.

The Office of Education also plans to provide transportation to ensure the safe travel of students participating in the program.

Ha Yoonsoo, Superintendent of the Busan Office of Education, said, "This program will greatly help students internalize the values of courtesy, filial piety, respect, and consideration," and added, "The Office of Education will do its best to expand the foundation of character education through various experiential activities in cooperation with the local community."
