Mayor Kim Dookyum, Agricultural Organizations, and Others Harvest Integrity Rice
Ulsan City will hold a rice harvesting event at 2:30 PM on the 7th in the kitchen garden paddy field located within the City Hall's Living Garden.
This event is organized to mark the end of a year’s hard work and to wish for a more prosperous Ulsan. The rice is being harvested five months after Mayor Kim Dookyum, city officials, and agricultural organizations planted the seedlings together on May 16.
More than 40 participants, including Mayor Kim Dookyum, Acting City Council Chair Kim Jongseop, Ulsan Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Lee Yoonchul, UN Food and Agriculture Organization Korea Liaison Office Director Tang Shengyao, Korea Rural Leaders Ulsan Federation President Lee Sangyeol, as well as public officials, farmers, and citizen representatives, will join the event.
The kitchen garden paddy field at City Hall's Living Garden consists of three sections totaling about 215 square meters, where three types of rice are grown: non-glutinous rice (143 square meters), black rice (43 square meters), and glutinous rice (29 square meters).
This rice was named 'Cheongnyeommi' (Integrity Rice) to symbolize the commitment of public officials to practice integrity by planting and nurturing seeds of integrity within the government building.
In particular, eco-friendly farming methods were used to grow the rice, such as releasing mudfish, apple snails, and leeches, and letting ducks roam to eliminate various pests.
The rice harvested on this day will be used to make rice cakes, which will be shared as a symbol of integrity and unity.
An Ulsan City official said, "We are pleased to have created a unique attraction and a relaxing space for citizens by establishing a kitchen garden paddy field and cultivating Integrity Rice within the government building. As the rice has grown well and is being harvested without issue, this event holds great significance as a celebration for all Ulsan City officials to conclude the year with integrity."
