Pyeongtaek Sinjang-dong Global Community Center Breaks Ground in October

Pyeongtaek Sinjang-dong Global Community Center Breaks Ground in October Perspective view of Pyeongtaek-si Sinjang-dong Global Community Center

The 'Global Community Center' in Sinjang-dong, Pyeongtaek-si, Gyeonggi-do, will break ground in October.

Gyeonggi-do announced on the 6th that as part of the Pyeongtaek Sinjang Urban Regeneration Project, selected in 2019 by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, it is promoting various projects according to the urban regeneration activation plan, including ▲establishment of a win-win cooperation shopping district ▲operation of a startup incubating program ▲creation of a handmade clothing co-working space ▲housing improvement support ▲operation of resident capacity-building programs.

The Sinjang-dong area formed a military base village around the US military base established in 1952 during the Korean War, and since then, due to the influence of the US military base, active economic activities took place in the base village and Songtan Central Market (currently Gukje Central Market).

However, recently, due to large-scale housing development and industrial complex construction in nearby areas, population and commercial districts have been drained, accelerating the decline of the original downtown. As a result, there is a growing need to revitalize the area by utilizing Sinjang-dong’s multicultural, multinational, and multi-class characteristics and resources, making urban regeneration urgently required.

The 'Global Community Center' to be constructed this time will be built at 320-7 Sinjang-dong, Pyeongtaek-si, with one basement floor and five above-ground floors, covering a total floor area of 5,514.17㎡. This center will provide various community spaces for multinational, multicultural, and multi-class residents, including a health lifestyle support center, multicultural harmony school, indoor recreation, and a global food culture platform. Additionally, to resolve the shortage of parking spaces, the entire 4th and 5th floors above ground and the rooftop will be planned as a smart public parking lot.

With the completion of the 'Global Community Center' in December 2026, it is expected to create a hub space that embraces multinational, multicultural, and multi-class residents fitting the status of 'Dain Dasaek (多人多色) International City, Sinjang-dong,' and to help revitalize the local commercial district by providing much-needed parking spaces.

Seo Sang-gyu, head of the Regeneration Management Team of Gyeonggi-do, said, "Sinjang-dong is a region with many exotic elements, so much so that it is called 'America within Korea,' and we are promoting regeneration projects to maximize the local characteristics." He added, "We will actively cooperate with cities and counties to meet the needs of various classes and ensure sustainable urban regeneration."
